What to Do if Your Braces Wire is Poking You

Posted .

Sometimes during orthodontic treatment, a wire may shift or bend just enough to cause irritation in your mouth. While this isn’t an emergency, it can definitely be uncomfortable. Here are a few simple tips to help until you can come see us.

  1. Use orthodontic wax.

A small piece of wax placed over the area where the wire is poking will create a smooth surface and give your cheek or gums some relief. Be sure to dry the spot with a tissue before applying the wax so it sticks better.

  1. Try gently moving the wire.

If the wire has slipped out of place, you can use a clean cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil to push it back into a more comfortable position. Sometimes tucking it behind the bracket is all it takes.

  1. Trim the wire if necessary.

If you feel comfortable, and the wire is long enough to safely reach, you may use a small pair of sterilized nail clippers to carefully snip the very end of the wire. This should only be a temporary fix until we can make adjustments in the office.

  1. Rinse with warm salt water.

If the wire has caused a sore spot, rinsing with warm salt water a couple of times a day can help soothe irritation and keep the area clean.

  1. Call our office.
