6 Reasons To Get Started With Invisalign This Summer

There’s a lot to love about summer! No early mornings rushing to get to school on time, time spent with friends around the pool or BBQ, fun family vacations—the slower pace and chance to create special memories is something to look forward to every year. Orthodontics is probably the last thing on your mind, but this is actually the perfect time to take the first step towards improved oral health with Invisalign clear aligners! Let’s explore 6 reasons to get started with Invisalign this summer and how Coleman Orthodontics can help you get the smile you’ve always wanted.

More flexibility in your schedule

Kids don’t have school, and many parents have more time off work during the summer. That makes it much easier to set time aside for the appointments you’ll need to get the Invisalign process started! This includes a complimentary consultation with Dr. Coleman in our Syracuse office to determine if you’re a good fit for clear aligners. If you do move forward with treatment, you’ll be scheduled for follow-up visits once every six weeks or so. Starting your orthodontic journey in the summer means you’ll have plenty of time to adjust to this new routine.

An easier transition at home

The laid-back pace we enjoy all summer makes it a fantastic time to adjust to the ins and outs of orthodontic treatment! While they may not take as much getting used to as traditional braces, there’s still a learning curve involved with Invisalign clear aligners. For the system to be successful, you’ll need to wear the aligners for 20-22 hours each day throughout treatment. They’re also replaced with the next in the series every 1-2 weeks to keep up with the movements your teeth are making. If these guidelines aren’t followed, it can extend the total treatment time or lead to subpar results.

You may not be dealing with any brackets or wires as an Invisalign patient, but the aligners still create pressure to move your teeth into the desired positions. This can cause some mild discomfort while you get used to the feeling, but you’ll adapt to this relatively quickly. You’ll also need some time to get used to putting your aligners in and out with ease and get comfortable speaking with them in. The more you wear your aligners, the faster you’ll get used to them! Beginning your smile journey with a more relaxed schedule will give you extra time to adjust to having an aligner in so many hours each day.

Extra time for oral hygiene

Many families are run off their feet during the school year, and it can be easy to let oral hygiene slip. Some nights you may be ready to fall into bed without so much as glancing at your toothbrush! While we all need to take good care of our teeth and gums, it’s essential for orthodontic patients. After all, clear aligners can straighten your teeth, but they won’t keep them clean! Thankfully, the Invisalign system makes it simple to maintain a good dental hygiene routine, even when you feel like being lazy. Since the clear aligners are removable, you take them out before brushing and flossing as you normally would. With no hectic mornings or late-night study sessions, you’ll find it easier than ever to give your smile some TLC!

Enjoy all your favorite summer snacks

One of the most significant learning curves associated with traditional braces treatment is the food restrictions. Since crunchy and sticky foods can break brackets and warp wires, braces patients need to avoid eating them until treatment is complete. One big benefit of Invisalign is that you won’t have to worry about this! Because the aligners are designed to be removed before eating, you can still enjoy all your favorite summer snacks, from BBQ sandwiches and chips to corn on the cob and fruit salad.

As we noted above, oral hygiene is important for orthodontic patients. As an Invisalign patient, that includes caring for your aligners. When you remove one to eat, you’ll need to be sure to brush well and rinse your aligner before putting it back in. This helps remove food particles that can get trapped between your teeth and the aligner, making it easier for bacteria to flourish and cause trouble.

We recommend brushing after every meal for two minutes each time and flossing each night before bed. If you aren’t able to brush before putting your aligner back in, you can still rinse your mouth with water a few times to wash some of the debris away. Taking good care of your teeth and gums during treatment will help prevent cavities and ensure the best results once your smile journey is complete!

Take advantage of natural growth spurts

If you’re looking into Invisalign for your child rather than yourself, summer can be an especially beneficial time to begin treatment. Children go through growth spurts in phases, with “rest periods” in between. Several studies have shown that these growth spurts are most likely to happen during the summer months! Researchers believe this is probably due in part to the pituitary gland responding to the longer days and increased temperature. The optimal time for straightening teeth is during their maximum growth period, too! Whatever the reason for those summertime growth spurts, they give us the perfect opportunity to move a child’s teeth as effectively as possible.

Increased self-confidence once school starts back

Although Invisalign can be faster than treatment with traditional braces, it won’t be complete by the time school starts back, even if you or your child begins this summer. That doesn’t mean you won’t see some improvements, though! By the time school starts back, you’ll be able to notice slight differences in your smile, giving you an extra boost of confidence. Not only that, but because Invisalign aligners are almost invisible, no one will even have to know you’re in the middle of orthodontic treatment!
